I'll also include if there is a required app as well as I know some care about that. ![]() Generally involves strings of independent puzzles in a chain until you reach the end, rather than an overall mystery.ģ) Adventure/Story games: This genre contains elements of escape room games, but is more inspired by old point and click type adventure games and also focuses much more heavily on telling an overall story, with the puzzles mostly involving object collecting and combining between reading story narrations and talking to other characters.įor each category, I'll rank the game systems and list my number of "scenarios" played of each, as well as give comments on the amount of content for each one. The ones I've played generally fall into 3 categories:ġ) Murder Mystery/whodunit type games: These generally focus on solving a crime and identifying a culprit, the prime example being SHCD.Ģ) Escape Room games: These borrow specifically from real life escape room type puzzles as well as the original Escape Room online games that inspired those. Keep in mind I haven't played every game/system in this genre, there are a ton I haven't had the chance to try yet so aren't included in my review/ranking. I'm going to divide these up into 3 "subgenres" to simplify things a bit and then talk about the systems in more detail. Might also help anyone who is looking at trying one to see which they might be interested in. I often see reviews of specific mysteries/versions of these types of games, but after playing a ton of them in the last 2 years, I think it would be interesting to review the different "game systems" in this genre and talk about which I liked and the pros and cons.
